King-Ohger Poster

Ohsama Sentai King-ohger will the 47th installment in Toei’s long-running annual tokusatsu Super Sentai series. King-Ohger will mark the franchise’s first all insect motif for the colorful spandex wearing heroes. Also, while not really big series departure, the heroes will also be wearing more protective armor usually seen in Metal Hero series. This is probably due to theme of royal knights.

According to official press release, the plot of King-Ohger revolves around the five kingdoms who live together in harmony are attacked by the evil Underground Empire Bugnarak who make their return after being defeated 2000 years prior. To repel the invaders once more, the monarchs of each kingdom forego their differences by joining forces and become King-Ohgers, armed with the power of the Shugods- giant mechanical deities are the protectors of respective kingdoms.

As for our main heroes, first off, we have Gira (portrayed by Taisei Sakai), an orphan who is the self-proclaimed of Shugoddam, the industrious kingdom where the Shugods were created, thus making it the strongest kingdom of the five. Gira transforms into the red warrior, Kuwagata Ohger, and primarily fights with a sword.

Next is Yanma Gust (portrayed by Aoto Watanabe), the king of the technological kingdom of N’kosopa. Yanma was born in the slums and raised to the position of king with his own efforts and intellect. He transforms into the blue warrior, Tombo Ohger (a dragonfly motif) and more proficient marksman and fights using firearms.

Our first heroine is Himeno Ran (portrayed by Erika Marukami), the queen of Ishabana, a kingdom known for their advances in medicine and the arts. Himeno is a brilliant doctor, but is known to be selfish and is obsessed with beauty, will help those in dire need. She transforms into the yellow warrior, Kamakiri Ohger (a praying mantis) and uses as sickle as her signature weapon.

Next is the most mysterious of the main characters, Rita Kaniska (portrayed by Yuzuki Kirakawa), a monarch of the snowy kingdom of Gokkan, where Rita is the Chief Justice, whose true face and even gender still remains unknown. Rita is will transform into the violet warrior, Papillion Ohger (butterfly motif) and uses an archer’s bow.

Lastly, we have Kaguragi Dybowski (portrayed by So Kaku) king to the agricultural kingdom of Toufu, who despite his cheerful persona is crafty manipulator, and not be underestimated. Kaguragi is seen being accompanied with a shodow-aide by his side. Kaguragi will transform into the back warrior, Hachi Ohger (based on a hornet) and will use claws as his primary weapon.

Now, thanks to Bandai’s official website, they have posted the official images for the DX OhgerCalibur, the henshin device and main weapon of our heroes. In keeping with the royal knight theme, the device clearly resembles that of a sword, and is a play on Excalibur, the legendary sword wielded by King Arthur. The OhgerCaliber has what seems to be switches and symbols of the respective heroes. This could be for transformation, weapon change or for summoning their mechs.

And speaking of mech, Bandai’s official YouTube channel has posted a video of the DX King-Ohger mecha complete with full combination sequence. Not only that, they’ve also reviled the first auxiliary mech the heroes will get, the God Kabuto, which will transform into a giant cannon.

Well, it’s certainly been a long time since I’ve been really excited for a new Super Sentai series, and King-Ohger has piqued my interest. While it’s still too early to make any assumptions, but this series does show promise with new concepts and bold designs. Well, the only way to know for sure is to tune in for the premiere on the 4th of March.
