Greetings and salutations, dear reader! if you remember last February, I made a post on what is essentially a “waifu”, well to continue of on this, I’ve decided to make a list of the top waifus in recent anime (according to me anyway). So, without any further ado, let’s get on it.

The world of anime is home to a plethora of fictional characters coming in all sorts of forms, and these characters can be very popular and loved for a variety of reasons. The prototypical shonen protagonist are known for their strength and courage, some goes for shojo heroines who are inspiring role models for girls (and even boys) everywhere. Anime waifus though…

An anime waifu is the theoretical ideal partner/companion for a viewer, typically a female character with traits such beauty, intelligence, loyalty, talented/skillful, a sense of humor, some fanservice, and of course personality. The traits I’ve listed above are purely subjective on what makes the ideal waifu, but certain waifus have established themselves as clear favorites.

Mai Sakurajima (Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai)

Mai

Mai Sakurajima from Bunny Girl Senpai is a loveable tsundere who wants to stay on the down-low despite her status as a model and actress. As we find out in the story, Mai’s mother forced her into the industry at a very young age, due to this, she feels disenchanted since most people only see her for the characters the portrays instead of who she really is.

Mai’s Adolescence Syndrome grants her the anonymity she’s always wanted, but at a cost, it gradually erases her from existence as a side effect. However, it was with the help of Sakuta, someone genuinely loves Mai for who she is and has helped her overcome her syndrome. Our bunny girl may have a cold exterior, but she is loyal and protective towards those she cares about.

Mirko (My Hero Academia)

Mirko, or Rumi Usagiyama, from My Hero Academia is the 5# pro-hero according to the Japanese Hero Billboard Chart. Now, this lovely lady checks off many boxes; those who are into tanned-skin girls, those into athletic girls, and amazing legs. In the anime, her legs are wickedly powerful that a single kick can knockout an entire mob of villains.

Mirko is a tough girl with an equally tough personality and prefers to work independently, compared to most of her peers. She’s a fighter and never backs down from a fight, despite numerous injuries. She’s got an amazing personality combined with her unique character design, she’s a total catch.

Power (Chainsaw Man)

Power

Power from Chainsaw Man is an aggressive, unpredictable mess, and you just gotta love her for that. She enters the story as another devil-type member of Makima’s experimental squad. As a blood fiend, she can create weapons out of her own blood, but in exchange, she develops insatiable thirst for the stuff. So, a word of caution: best to stay away if you’ve accidentally cut yourself.

While Power certainly done some questionable things throughout the series, she’s shown how loyal and courageous she can be when the situation calls for it. Despite having not reason to stay in Public Safety after the Bat Devil incident, she decides to keep Denji company and protect him from other devil-hybrids.

Erza Scarlet (Fairy Tail)

The Fairy Tail anime/manga has no shortages of female heroines and potential waifu material, the likes of Lucy Heartifilia to Juvia Lockser and nerdy Levy McGarden. Arguably, though, it’s Erza Scarlet that takes the #1 spot as Fairy Tail’s best waifu. This sword-wielding goddess has the ability to equip a bunch of armors to suit the occasion, like a badass magical girl.

There’s plenty to love about Erze other than her suit up magic, from her tough but fair attitude, to her hidden loving side, to her impressive combat skills and the occasional girlish tendencies she displays. This girl loves good armor, theater, cake, and the mysterious bad boy Jellal, but most important of all, she’s like a responsible big sister to Natsu and/or Grey if need be.

Hinata Hyuga (Naruto)

Hinata Hyuga is a standout character in the story of Naruto, a dandere who was inspired by when series protagonist Naruto Uzumaki shared some heartfelt words with her during the Chinin Exam story arc. Ever since then, the meek Hinata has been working hard to live up to Naruto’s expectations of her, and it changed her life.

As the series progressed, Hinata has grow into a more confident shinobi who will gladly risk her life for duty’s sake or for the Hidden Leaf Village- It’s no wonder Naruto fell in love with her late on. She and Naruto now happily married, an exemplary partner and mother.

Kurisu Makise (Steins; Gate)

Kurisu

Kurisu from Steins; Gate is a sarcastic genius who isn’t afraid of speaking her mind. A total tsundere who has stolen the hearts of fans with her dry sense of humor, creative mindset, and a realistic outlook on life. Her development wasn’t quite as stark as other characters on the series, but the subtle nuances of her arc made fans instantly fall in love her.

We learn in the series that Kurisu life is rather lonely and is person who values the moments when shared with others, something we as the audience can relate to a certain level. Often being the voice of reason amongst the group, Kurisu is hardly on to lose her composure makes her a great contrast to Rintarou is zanier of the two.

Saber (Fate Series)

Saber

Saber, or Artoria Pendragon, is a Saber-class servant. A brave fighter and one who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty in battle. Saber is someone who is determined, trustworthy, and who’ll see the job done, and some who won’t be stop for being a woman.

Saber has proven on multiple occasions that she’s just as strong (if not stronger) than most of her male peers in series. A character with a strong moral compass from which she would never stray and always tried to resolve conflicts in a way that’s fair to all parties involved. It’s no wonder why she is easily one of the most popular characters in the Fate franchise.

Yoruichi Shihoin (Bleach)

Yoruichi

Much like Fairy Tail, the hit anime supernatural shonen anime Bleach has a handful of potential waifus to its name, from Rukia Kuchiki to Orihime Inoue and Rangiku Matsumota. But this dark-skinned beauty has risen to the top spot. While not as prominent throughout the series, Yoruichi’s beauty and skill have made her a memorable character.

Her popularity is not just attributed by her good looks but also for her mischievous personality, as well as strong sense of loyalty and duty, which are admirable traits of any person. As mentioned before, this beauty is a reliable fighter able to go toe to toe with the strongest foe barehanded.

Miku Nakano (Quintessential Quintuplets)

There something to like about all five of the Nakano sisters, from goofy Yotsuba to tsundere Nino, but middle-child, Miku, has become the anime’s favorite waifu. Miku is a classic dandere (someone shy, quiet, timid, etc..), but she’s a kind and loving girl underneath all that shyness.

A soft-spoken and unassertive person in nature, contrasting that of her other sisters. That’s not to say that Miku doesn’t standout, she does her best to impress her tutor Futaru and making her feeling known. She’s been shown to go as far as baking pastries for him, even she’s isn’t all that good at it.

Yor Forger (Spy X Family)

Yor is one of the protagonists of in series alongside her pretend-husband, Loid and foster daughter, Anya. This mom leads a double life as a clerk at the Berlint City Hall during the day, and an assassin codenamed “Thorn Princess” by night. Known for her lack of social skills and often thinks of murder as a plausible solution to multiple situations.

Many fans have grown to adore her as a loving and protective mother, who can kick some serious ass whenever her loved ones are in trouble. There’s something alluring about Yor’s concern for Loid and Anya, which is much hotter compared to her guise as an assassin dressed in a seductive black dress.

Yor Forger has got to be one of the hottest moms in recent anime history. This gentle yet deadly housewife took anime cosplay circuit by storm.

Chisato Nishikigi (Lycoris Recoil)

Lycoris Recoil’s top gun, Chisato definitely made her mark as one of 2022’s most beloved waifus. Since the anime first aired last summer, this gun toting blondie has captivated the hearts of many weebs and gun enthusiast.

Chisato’s carefree attitude and happy vibes, she shows the beauty of living life to the fullest regardless of people’s expectations. She’s also a stubborn one at that, even holding firm to her beliefs in the face of death- which is something to be admired.

If nothing else, her talents as a sharpshooter have impressed us in the multitude of action scenes the anime has to offer.

Marin Kitagawa (My Dress-Up Darling)

Banner 2

Ok, you knew this was inevitable, Marin from My Dress-Up Darling takes the top spot. The gyaru trope has been used plenty of times in anime, but rarely is it used for the main heroine- rarer still does it defy expectations.

Sure, she’s cute, pretty, and damn attractive, but beneath all that surface level (and not to sound cliché) it’s all in her personality that truly makes her a darling. Through out the anime, despite her lack of skills for sewing costumes, she continued on doing with her love of cosplay.

It’s very evident with her interaction with Gojo that we learn just how much of a sweetheart she it, especially in her admiration for his skill. This interaction of theirs, the back and forth of making costumes turned into a heart-warming “romance” that just makes you happy to watch.

As I’ve said last year, Marin the kind of girl every otaku dream of. It’s also true for those of us who are introverted, aspiring to be socially adept, outgoing, and perhaps popular. Marin proves love is possible for people on the opposite ends of the social spectrum.
