Greetings and salutations, my fellow comrades! Waifu Waifu, Lovely Delightful is the catchphrase for us here at Hobility this month- I mean, c’mon, it’s February, the month of love and valentines. And yes, I should’ve uploaded this I bit early. But here’s the thing; you don’t really need a particular time to show your love, appreciation and affection, yes? No (probably)

So, staying on theme of Waifus, we all have that special 2D-animated lady we hold dear in our hearts. Whether they be from the days of Sailor Moon and Ranma ½, or to more recent times the likes of which include the blue-haired-demon-maid Rem, high schooler Kyoko Hori from Hiromiya, etc… The choices are endless and whatever your taste maybe, there’s bound to be one for you.

As for me, that spot goes to the blonde-blue-eyed French darling, Charlotte Dunois, from Infinite Stratos~

Charlote

Personal opinions aside though, 2022’s early anime releases have graced us with many to love, but one stands amongst them all! Marin Kitagawa from My Dress Up Darling has won us over almost single-handedly in the first episode with her playfulness, confidence, and kindness making her a likable heroine. Despite her outward gyaru appearance lies an otaku yearning to cosplay. Albeit the obvious, the anime is not shy with its fan service either with putting Marin’s more well-endowed assets in fun/risqué situations. If anything, she’s that kind of person that you can’t help but to fall in love with, and be loved in return.

For the uninitiated, you’re probably wondering what all this means…  Yes, there’s that one unicorn out there that’s new to anime and has no idea what the hell is a waifu? Well, it’s a colloquial term that Otakus have come to adopt when referring to their anime/manga crushes. Husbando vice versa refers to male characters, too.

The exact origin of the word isn’t that clear cut and dry, and could possibly predate the anime boom of the early 2000s/2010s, and is probably lost to the ether of the internet by now. But according to KnowYourMeme.com, the first ever recorded use of the word “waifu” comes from the high school anime Azumanga Daioh back in 2002, and has been the prevailing theory since. Thus, the phrase “mai waifu” is born. You can watch the video below for yourselves.

While the accessibility to anime back in the early days of the 2000s was limited to where you live, many in the west relied on Cartoon Networks Toonami and Adult Swim to scratch their itch. Thankfully, the rise of the internet gave way to the creation of online forums such 4chan. And it was places like these that the word waifu spread becoming common place today.

Also, it’s interesting to note that there are variants to the term as well such as the male equivalent being “Husbando.” Creating the phrase “mai husbando” giving some love to our heroes who often get overlooked in that department. Notable Husbandos include Black Butler’s Sebastian Michaielis, Code Geass’ Lelouch Lamperouge, even the “over powered” Kirito from Sword Art Online…

Vegeta and Bulma

But if you were to ask me, the one character who truly deserves the title of Husbando has to be the Prince of Saiyans himself- the one and only Vegeta! Throughout his appearances in Dragon Ball Z, Vegata has shown great character development, even surpassing main protagonist Goku. Going from introductory villain, to main cast, and even as far to having a relationship with Bulma, and arguably best dad in anime. Come at me, bruh!

So, whatever your preferences are, find that special anime love of yours and embrace it! Well, guys that’s it for this time. Stay safe out there.
