Greetings and salutations, my fellow comrades! let’s get right to it, nesoberis, yeah. If you’re an avid aficionado of anime figure collecting, you’ve probably seen them before, or even bought them, too. These nesoberis, these big-headed hugable thing, these plushy looking things are what I like to call the Japanese equivalent of a teddy bear: soft toys made to be loved.

As I was searching the ever expanding interwebs, it dawned on me; what does nesoberi even mean? Well, thankfully, the good folks at Madarake had that covered, all the credit goes to them. Nesoberi (寝そべり) is the noun form of the verb 寝そべる (nesoberu) which means to lie flat or to sprawl out. It’s often used for this type of plus toy that is in a lying down position. So, for me, this was a moment of understanding as I finally know why they are the way they are.

The second question that was lingering in my mind was who were the people responsible making these. The answer to that might actually surprise you as I’ve come to learned it was SEGA. Yes, that SEGA, the same SEGA that made Sonic the Hedgehog. I mean, it makes sense that a company that also produces figurines would also make soft toys. So, thank you SEGA for giving us more things to love.

Another thing I’ve come to learned about hugable guys are that they come in a multitude of sizes, ranging from conveniently small to hilariously big- and I mean big! Before I go any further, I just wanna give big thank you to DeJapan blog, as I would’ve never know this without help from them. Nesoberies have a wide range of sizes and can be easily distinguished by their acronyms as stated by DeJapan.

First up is the keychain type or also referred to keychain mascot. The smallest in the whole line which is a about 10cm to 12cm long (think of 3 3/4 G.I. Joe figures). Just as their name suggest, they’re primary purpose is to strap onto something, i.e. your keys or even backpack.

Next we got the normal types or normal nesoberi nuigurumi (NNN). Just slightly bigger than the keychain type, at about 15cm to 20cm long. Also, these types do come with chains attached to them so you adorn them to your person as accessories too.

Now, we’re gonna move onto what I would call the “meat and potatoes” in the world of nesoberi(s), the mega jumbo nesoberi nuigurumi (MJNN). With a length of over 40cm that’s longer that footlong subway. This type of nesoberi is the most preferred among collectors as their size makes it wort owing and irresistibly hugable.

Last and certainly not the least, we have the hyper jumbo nesoberi nuigurumi (HJNN). Remember when I said abut this things being hilariously big, that they just dwarf the other sizes outta the water. Like, dude, just look to the right how big that thing is-  it’s as big as full grown child! jokes aside, if you do decide to own something like this, just make sure you have enough space for it, yeah.

Anyways, before I end this post, if you’re a big fan nesoberies, I do urge you to head on ever to the R/Neseberi reddit and join the community over there. I’ve some cool and interesting that you guys might enjoy. Bye, see y’all next time, Stay safe out there.
