Greetings and salutations, everyone! As of writing this, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eiichro Oda’s One Piece has been out for over 2-weeks now, and I’m sure many have already watched it. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that this series would be another dud given the streaming service’s previous attempts at a live-action anime adaption. To my surprise however, this series did the impossible and even proved many people wrong: being a good a show.
With that said, its not new for the streaming service to adapt an already existing animated property into live-action like previous attempts like Cowboy Bebop or Death Note. But to adapt something like One Piece- a series known long as there has been over a thousand episodes and anime spanning all the way back to 1999, as well a plethora of movies. A franchise that spans over two decades can be overwhelming for new commers, and may put you off from watching the live action series. Thankfully, this adaptation will only be covering the first arc in the series and do away with the fillers that plagued the anime. Netflix has managed to surmised the all that content into hour-long 8-epside segments. This is great for newcomers as this requires very little input from the viewers, and encouraging viewers to try the anime after watching this.
It’d be an understatement as the how much of a following One Piece has with its legions of fans, and these fans have been keeping a close eye on its production since its announcement. With many of the fandom have taken to social media scrutinizing on its accuracy to the source material. While many purists have made it clear of their distaste of the adaptation, many have welcomed it and many of new fans seem to enjoy it. So, yes, you don’t need to be a fan or have watched the anime to enjoy this one.
One great take away from all this is how this is that Netflix not gatekeeping the series, of who can and who cannot watch it and making a show that welcomes all. The very changes and subverting fans expectations of how the characters should look like challenges the idea of gatekeeping and reminds viewers that entertainment should be for all to enjoy. The positive reception from viewers prove that some risks are worth taking.
I’ve also said that the live action series has increased general public interest in the anime. So, Netflix has gone to great effort by making the anime available on streaming platform making it much easier for audiences to jump straight in without much hassle. As of now, there’s only 10 seasons available for now, here’s hoping more will be coming.
Now, the question on many who’ve watched to the end are wondering if there’s gonna be a second season left off on an open-ended. This clearly sets at a second season, it’s still too early to tell if it’ll be renewed. According to showrunner duo Steven Maeda and Matt Owens have recently said that fans can expect a second season some time in 2024 or 2025 at the earliest.
